Our Vision and Purpose

The principle – what are we doing?

We structure the whole of our church life around what we believe to be our two Biblical purposes:

MISSION - the task of making Jesus known.
MATURITY - our task of becoming full devoted followers of Jesus Christ .

These are in fulfilment of the two great instructions that Jesus has given to us:

The Great Commission of Christ:
"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matthew 28:19-20

The Great Commandment of Christ:
"Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' Matthew 22:36-37

We bring these two central ideas of Mission & Maturity together in our purpose statement.

Burlington's Purpose Statement:

We believe a great commitment to the great commandment

and the great commission will grow a great church.

The Practice - how are we doing it?

We believe that the greatest journey anybody can make is from unbelief to becoming a fully devoted follower of Jesus Christ. Along with all churches it is our unique task to help people travel this journey.

It is our experience, that whilst people travel this journey at various speeds, that most go through the stages outlined in the STEPS illustrated.

Each stage is important in order for people to move towards maturity in Christ (up the staircase.) We believe that it is our task to help people at every step and that a thriving church is where everybody is moving up the staircase.

Helping people on this journey encompasses our two primary tasks of mission and maturity.
